Crispy Beef Rolls

Due to my Algerian heritage, these rolls (Boureks) are in my blood. With a crispy outside layer and a warm tickling interior, these rolls are great after a day of fasting during Ramadan. Although traditional eaten after a day of Ramadan, they are great to store in the freezer for last minute dinners and lunches

Ingredients:

-1 pack of Spring Roll sheets

-1 lbs of lean ground beef

-1tbs of the following, salt, pepper, garlic powder, dried parsley, dried mint, and cinnamon

-2 onions, finely chopped

-2 tbs of olive oil

-one pack of spredable white chesse (like The Laughing Cow)

Steps:

Step #2: Once caramelized, add the beef and the seasonings to the pan. Lower the heat to medium and mix. Smash the beef to create ground beef.

Step #1: On a cutting board or food processor, chop the onions. In a large skillet, start the olive oil and lightly caramelize the onions.

Step #4: Turn off the heat and let the meat fully cool. *Pro Tip: let the meat rest for a longer amount of time (about 3 hours) so the meat is easier to handle. It may become oily if you don’t allow it to rest.

Step #3: Cover with a lid until fully cooked mixing occasionally, about 10 minutes.

Step #5: On a large plate, place the spring roll sheet on the plate in the perspective of a diamond. With the point closest to you, add the meat in a small 2cm by 2cm “log” 3 cm away from the tip. Cut the cheese into two small pieces to top the beef.

Step #6: Using the tip closest to you, fold over the beef. Then, fold the sides to the left and the right in to create and envelope. The top tip should appear equivalent, not lopsided. Now, with the tip closest to you roll up until the end. To discourage it to “un roll”, put water at the end point to seal.

Step #7: Once done with all of the rolls, you can freeze them for later use, fry them in vegetable oil flipping half way through, about 1 minute and a half. My personal preference is to bake in a 400 degree oven for about 17 minutes flipping at the 10th minute.

Step #8: Serve with lemon wedges or your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy 💙
